Gnasher's Summer
Adele and Gnasher
Published 03 Nov 2018
Oh dear ... the weather's getting cooler, the nights longer and Gnasher isn't too impressed. Not sure how much he recollects complaining bitterly about last winter's snow, but a cat's memory is usually pretty good when it comes to creature comforts. At least he's had a glorious summer and his antics have raised many a smile to the faces of the cabin community.
For example, one day a fisherman had briefly left a bucket of crabs outside his cabin only to glimpse Gnasher running away with TWO of them. Well, he would hardly be given a chance to come back for seconds, would he?
On another occasion he was very much the proud hunter as he laid a dead sea bird outside one of his favourite cabins - an extra special gift. However, his evident prowess as a fierce predator was slightly dented, when it was discovered to be a hawk's prey which he'd claimed as his own. He was absolutely livid when it was removed as being rather unsavoury - it was his and he liked it!
He's pretty fearless when it comes to other creatures, too - where most of the wildcats give seagulls a wide berth, young Gnasher's in where angels fear to tread, brazening it out. He'll even stalk the rather large (and distinctly fierce) visiting Scottish Wildcat lookalike.
But Gnasher does have his gentler side. He will (almost) let his favourite feeders stroke him and he loves playing with the other young ones, especially Adele and Felix. One very touching moment came after it was feared that his father, Salem, had gone missing as he hadn't been seen for some time. They were close, as Salem had spent a lot of time with his son during his kitten days. One early evening, however, Salem was seen sauntering through the railings to be greeted by an ecstatic Gnasher, who scampered over to greet him. A touching moment all round.
So, despite the niggling fear that the cabins will lose their site (and the cats their home) all in all it has been a good summer for Gnasher and his gang. He's getting to be quite a poster boy for the Wildcats of Middleton. We must hope that he and his community's future stays bright.
