An Act of Pure Spite
Labour Hijack Money Earmarked for New Youth Centre
Published March 2018
Hartlepool Labour Group have moved in on over £600,000 of money that had been ring-fenced to replace a demolished Youth Centre in Seaton Carew. The move followed a humiliating by-election defeat for Labour in the Seaton ward which saw their candidate, Ann Marshall coming a poor third after receiving just 275 votes.
The £600,000+ pot of money is part of the 106 ‘community money’ payable by Esh Developments as a result of its recent housing development in Seaton Carew which had required the demolition of the existing Youth Centre. The deal was negotioated by former elected Mayor Stuart Drummond and his then Cabinet with the money to build a new Youth Centre and additional sports facilities ring-fenced for that purpose.
At a meeting of the Full Council held on Thursday, 14th December Labour voted to remove the ring-fencing and make the money available to be spent in wards other than Seaton.
